Open Mic Recap: October 24, 2017

On October 24, 2017,  Straylight Literary Magazine and The Beat held another Open Mic Night in The Den of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Almir from The Beat was an awesome MC. Performances included covers by Byrell Lampkins and Hannah LeClair, two cello performances by Shawn Martens, stand-up by Rachel Landa, poetry readings by Crystal Dixon and Loveneet K. Sidhu, and a reading of a short story by Jenny Broe. We saw some amazing talent at Open Mic Night and we at Straylight can’t wait to see the talent that emerges in the future. The Beat, thanks for partnering with us!

Throughout the evening, the audience participated in creating a Halloween themed poem as a paper was passed along and a line was added by each person. The paper was folded after each new line to keep the previous line hidden and it ultimately formed “The Exquisite Corpse.”

The Exquisite Corpse (October 24, 2017)

The last person on Earth sat in their home and watched the sunrise;

They heard a knock at the door

The wolf raises its head to the moon

Howls as loud as a Banchee

the blood moon rose as the clock struck midnight

spooky, scary skeletons send shivers down your spine

Shrieks and moans will pierce your soul, seal your doom tonight

She bought the candy, and then she ate the candy

The empty bowl on her doorstep with the note saying ‘take one’

was an accurate representation of her failures in life

A place to do homework…or add to this poem

Man, this is an amazing pen!

Running from the cops through the 7th

Six bodies drop and nobody went to heaven

Block stay hot when I am creepin’ with the weapon

Gotta keep the pills in one all because of my depression

I wish I could bake a cake made out of rainbows and smiles

and we’d all eat it together and be happy

Today I picked a pretty flower

I wore it in my hair because I forgot to shower

You’re not on fire Ricky Bobby

You’re not on fire Ricky Bobby

I love history

Law is life

is Final Fantasy 7 ever going to come

because I don’t really care too much if it does

The chicken tastes like butter,

and the way I love has nothing to do with the way mocking birds fly,

but it’s okay because a giant will fart in your mouth

The giant may capture you,

but you have not forgotten how to fight

Michael Jackson slays with thriller

The movie it is slays with humor and horror

Ba Bo Bee Boo I just gave everyone the fly
