Open Mic Recap: September 7, 2017

On September 7, 2017,  Straylight Literary Magazine held another Open Mic Night in The Den of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Chynna Chung was an outstanding MC, and even performed with Parkside Range, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside’s A cappella group. Performances included covers by Sierra Severson, Hannah Leclair, and Shannon Gallagher, an original song by Rebecca Hamer, and poetry readings by Ben Gurchack, Grace Herker, Robin Zelek, and Ricky Coney. We saw some amazing talent at Open Mic Night and we at Straylight can’t wait to see the talent that emerges in the future.

Throughout the evening, the audience participated in creating a poem as a paper was passed along and a line was added by each person. The paper was folded after each new line to keep the previous line hidden and it ultimately formed “The Exquisite Corpse.”

I could spot you a mile away
So predictable your words, I know what you’re gonna say
Right from the start. I was chasing you
Running around and around
Music soft as Dave munches on a walking taco
Anticipation is in the air as young performers wait
There is a ghost of change in the air as fall draws near
Maybe I’ll even see a gentle, brown deer
Silently sitting, waiting for my chicken sandwich to be ready
To eat is a torture I wouldn’t wish on anyone
The unforgiving reflection of your own shameful face
You are always hungover
Anne made fun of my eating…
She must pay!
The cat sat on the mat
And on his head was a hat
I am not alone
Heals in valleys
You gotta love some Mac & Cheese
cause it don’t make you sneeze
Fries before guys
Al foods before dudes
She said I am not afraid to die,
All my friends are dead, push me to the edge
I don’t really care if you cry
On the real, you should’ve never lied
Lies only cover the inevitable truth with shit
Destroying any chance of love and trust
Stars in the sky are the diamonds of the universe
And we are the miners reaching for success, despite the odds
Though I walk through the valley of death
I shall fear no evil
Being so insecure and uncertain
As bad as I wanted those people to leave, I know they wouldn’t stay
I drown in your sorrow, allow my mind to wander
I am deeply sorry for your loss
I ponder on what could have been
but it is too late, I am content
It’s life, oh well, So I go on without you
Because the only one I need is me
Two phones, two phones are all I need
In-graved with the numbers needed for me
Let’s get lit
Too lit for me even to admit
The people that talk behind your back are back there for a reason
Sometimes you only meet people for a season
Don’t go chasing waterfalls, stick to the rhythm you’re use to
Dead shot A.K. make your head roll, red dot retro Jordan dead stop
Like a sea urchin, I’ve got spines outside
Unwilling to betray my softness so quickly
I’m writing two lines because I was told to
I don’t know what to write, I’m sorry
Life is far too important of a thing
to ever talk seriously about
Not that that has ever stopped me from trying
Work hard, play hard is all I say
Because mama didn’t raise no bitch
And I got down on my knees and prayed it wasn’t true
To passion and love my heart will go on to better things within you
I know a man who has two sons
One hid a heart, the other felt numb in his
I know a man who had two sons
One held a secret, the other held a gun
Don’t lose your room key, or you’ll pay a fee
Or you’ll lose your lead
And you know that you’ll bleed
And you’re going to lose the deed
to everything you know
When you can no longer see the light of the moon
just look at the brightness of the stars
I would cross the earth
to get one more taco in my belly
The fake meat killed my liver
I am not God, this is the holy Mecca, fuck Donald Trump
Let’s keep DECA, Black Lives Matter, that is not up for discussion
You take your ass back where you came from if you think hate is cool
Love is easy, Hate ain’t cool
Show love to me and I’ll show love to you
Life may see simple and easy to one
but everything that seems light to you could be dark for another
Even in the mist of darkness
the sun, moon, and stars always glisten
the way her blue eyes glistened that night
with the reflection of a thousand city lights
a picture is worth a thousand words and snapshots of a flock of pretty birds
but all you have in that moment is then,
The ending to it? No one knows when.
