On March 9, 2017, Straylight Literary Magazine held another successsful Open Mic Night in The Den of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Madison Moore once again was a wonderful MC, even reciting her own poetry and performing a song. Performances included acoustic originals by John Falk, Kai Andersen and The Pickups, and Brett Gaertner, rapping by Angelo Gonzales, poetry by Rae Slager, Rebecca Hammer, Ricky Coney, and Robin Zelek, stand-up comedy by Evan Davies and Evan Schuster, acapella songs by Shannon Gallagher and Alexis Hunter, and a cover by Ashley Rellora. All of the talent shown was superb and we at Straylight look forward to more in the future.
Throughout the night, the audience engaged in creating a poem as a paper was passed along and a line was added by each participant. The paper was folded after each added line as to hide the previous line and ultimately produce “The Exquisite Corpse.”
The Exquisite Corpse (Mar. 9, 2017)
I’m embarrassing myself
and I don’t know how to handle it.
I tried to tell my mom and dad,
but I sat down and broke a chair.
My dog bit my toe off,
and I ate clam chowder for supper,
and Jordan got a stomach ache
from all the truth he tried to swallow,
for when he took a step the Earth would quake.
AND THEN WE ALL STARTED SCREAMING
and then I cried,
and I begged for a pardon,
in order to fly like the wind,
like the the edge of an ocean breeze.
She came back to my softly
and said, “Whoa, that’s so
just like, you-man-you know? Ha ha, but real talk though.”
Roses are red, violets are blue
I love the environment, do you?
I don’t know what to say,
so I bit my tongue
and tasted blood,
then realized it was Kool-Aid
pouring down the wall,
leathering coats the color of my soul.
